So I was starting to build pages on my blog, and I came across a page called "Book recommendations" and it got me thinking that I may start writing reviews and recommendations about the books that I have been reading on my self discovery. Some will be fact and some will be fiction, and hopefully most will have some sort of theme related to Cerebral palsy.
I remember searching pre the internet for books about my condition and stumbling upon this book in a second hand book store
The first copy of this book was in fact 1955 and this edition speaks about the many developments in the world of Cerebral Palsy in just ten short years. When I read this book the first time, due to it being written, not by someone with Cerebral Palsy but by various Clinical Psychologists, Professor etc it has a very statistical viewpoint. There are many case studies and statistics to read through. It didn't really speak to me as someone who has Cerebral Palsy, more to the parents or caregivers. I remember thinking at the time that it would be amazing to read real stories by people with cerebral palsy not just the view of those treating them. It turned out there was a silent community of people with the same level of cerebral palsy as me but in such an ableist world we could not connect before technology had developed enough in order to allow us the freedom to have a voice. I remember meeting someone campaigning for SCOPE and her not believing that I had cerebral palsy as I didn't seem to fit their idea of what someone with cerebral palsy looked like. Now that we have the internet I am finding people like myself who are able to function in society and can discuss the problems that we face. The book I mention was so doom and gloom that I never completed it. However my to be read pile is growing and I hope to be able to read a book a month and post a review.
Please also tag me with your recommendations and feel free to comment your reviews etc. Don't forget to subscribe through my blog to receive regular updates
